Delton Kellogg Volleyball

It was a banner day Saturday for the volleyball team as they won the KVA Championship by finishing a perfect 9-0 in the dual match portion and winning the conference tournament. The Big Cats mauled Maple Valley and pounded Pennfield to make the finals. Once again they faced the Eagles of Schoolcraft and the Panther Paw swatted that bird down in 4 games to take the title for the first time in Delton history. It showed all day in the eyes of each Panther player that they were there to win. It was a hard fought total team effort and the Big Cats left no doubt who rules the KVA. The 43 & 7 Cats seem to be peaking at the right time and will open up District play against host and 5th ranked Gull Lake on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.

Head Varsity

Jack Magelssen

The 2008-09 season marks Coach Magelssen's fourth year as the varsity volleyball coach at DKHS and his 31th overall season as a varsity volleyball coach.

During his career, Jack has coached in a number of other positions, including ten years as varsity cross country coach, ten years as assistant track coach, one year as assistant golf coach, and three years as the head volleyball coach at Kalamazoo Valley Community College.

In 1994, Coach Magelssen was named National High School Volleyball Coach of the Year and was also nominated for the award in 1987. On top of this, he has been selected Class A State Coach of the Year ten times by the Michigan Interscholastic Volleyball Coaching Association (MIVCA), an organization that he helped found and later served as president. Jack has also been honored twice as Michigan Coach of the Year in cross country.

Coach Magelssen's teams have appeared in the state finals 12 times - 10 of which ended in Class A championships. Under his lead, the Panthers have competed in the district finals, secured a second place finish in the KVA, and also won the KVA Sportsmanship Award in 2006.

Jack earned a M.A. in Physical Education from Western Michigan University. As a member of the track and cross country teams, he served as a team captain during his senior year and was the league champion in the 880 Yard Run for two years. His cross country and track teams won the MAC championship three years each.

Coach Magelssen recently retired from his teaching position and spends a great deal of time coaching at volleyball clinics and camps throughout the area.
